Kia Motors Targeted over Vehicle Controlling Components

Plaintiff: American Vehicular Sciences

Defendant: Kia Motors Corporation

Kia Motors is being sued for patent infringement in Texas Eastern District Court on Feb 13th. Kia Motors Corporation, through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of motor vehicles. The company manufactures and sells a range of passenger cars, recreational vehicles and other commercial vehicles in the domestic and international markets.

Patents-in-suit include US8060282 (Vehicle component control methods and systems based on vehicle stability), US8157047 (Occupant protection systems control techniques) and US8229624 (Vehicle diagnostic information generating and transmission systems and methods) and all these patents are currently assigned[i] to American Vehicular Sciences (source: Maxval’s Assignment Database).

The ‘282 and ‘624 patents relate generally to methods and systems for controlling components in a vehicle based on the stability of the vehicle and the ‘047 patent specifically covers protection systems, in the event of a crash involving the vehicle.

The complaint says that the defendant manufactures vehicles that include automatic crash notification systems and other similar control systems, including UVO eServices, that infringe the methods covered in the patents-in-suit.

The plaintiff  has filed other infringement suits (6:13-cv-00148, 6:13-cv-00149 and 6:13-cv-00150) on the same day involving different patents against Kia Motors.
